UTE DECKER

about the artist

ute decker is a german born artist jeweller. with a degree in political
economics, ute travelled extensively and lived in paris and new york for many
years as a linguist, journalist and documentary maker. she is now based in
london.
born into a family of artisan wine makers going back to the 16th century, ute
grew up in the rhine valley with a deep respect for nature and craftsmanship.
ute's jewellery practice is enriched by her experience in other mediums such
as sculpture, textiles, paper and ceramics. her journalistic background
continues to inform her practice: she thinks carefully about her work and its
context in society and the environment, while seeking a dialog with other
artist and advocating sustainability.

ute is an artist-maker who cares deeply about every aspect of her craft
including the materials she uses. striving to apply the most responsible
practices, ute uses reclaimed silver, the least toxic studio chemicals and
repurposed packaging.
ute is a founding member of the jewellery designers' collective and recently
started to collaborate with the renowned german metal sculptor benjamin
storch to develop wearable "arm-sculptures".
engaged in the campaign for ethical jewellery she is supporting the uniform
project for sustainable fashion in new york by creating an exclusive piece for
their charity auction in spring 2010. in the november 2009 issue of the
goldsmiths magazine ute writes about her experience working as a
sustainable studio jeweller.
